There are so many people who are used to this saying, ‘I can forgive but I will never forget’. What does this mean? It means you have still not forgiven because to forgive is to forget. To forgive is to look at your neighbor as if he had never sinned, and being unwilling to forgive shows that you have not understood or benefitted from God’s forgiveness. If you have been forgiven, that forgiveness will create in you a forgiving heart toward others. Let us understand the term forgiveness. Forgiveness means that God looks at you as if you had never sinned, and when you receive His forgiveness, you become blameless before Him. When you forgive and forget another’s sin, you will see him or her as Christ does. We should be more concerned about our offenders and their relationship with God and less about nursing our own grudges and ill will because the person most hurt by unforgiveness is you. God’s forgiveness does not sweep your sin under the carpet; instead, He completely washes them away. Luke 23:34, “Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.’ And they divided His garments and cast lots.” Our Lord, Jesus Christ forgave even those who mocked and killed Him. When you forgive your neighbour or those who hate you, this releases you from the destructive emotions of anger, bitterness, and revenge. A person who is a thorn in your flesh today may be your helper tomorrow. As Ephesians 4:31 says, “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.” It means when people offend you, God wants you to respond by blessing them.
